Focusing on Gameplay Prototyping
I've had a lot of ideas to add to the core gameplay, but I've either been distracted by work or by random polish.
As a result, I have found the gameplay progress of big guys upstairs stagnating while I chase little programming problems that bug me - be they bugs or lack of polish. I've been bothered by the lack of a game lobby for a while, or by the finicky-ness of joining a game. While polish is important, I ultimately feel the gameplay hasn't been representing what I've imagined was yet in the future for the project.
As a result, I'm going to be focusing more squarely on gameplay. I've already added in missing resources I had intended to have from the beginning - stone and iron. I have a list of more things to come:
- Player powers - players can shoot fire, launch storms and whirlwinds
- An actual use for gold as a resource
- Player vulnerability - players can be killed by units and buildings, limiting where they can go on the map without risk
- Eventual VR support
Of course, I'm going to be fixing gameplay bugs as well as polishing the experience, but I'm going to be focusing on building this gameplay prototype and testing if it is actually any fun.
